A union leader in New York has raised concerns about workers turning away from the Democratic Party, citing support for former President Trump in the upcoming November elections. Bob Bartels, manager of Steamfitters Local 638 and a lifelong Democrat, highlighted the frustration among blue-collar workers regarding economic and crime-related issues. Despite Trump’s legal challenges, Bartels explained that workers are disillusioned with the Biden administration’s policies and are seeking change that benefits America and its citizens.
In an interview with Brian Kilmeade, Bartels emphasized the urgency for change, stating, “They are very agitated. They are living week to week, some of them are not affording their bills, and I think things need to change.” Bartels noted that his members have expressed a desire to support Trump, and he is prepared to follow their lead when making a decision.
Bartels’ comments followed Trump’s visit to a construction site in New York City, where he received praise from hundreds of union workers. Trump expressed confidence in his prospects in New York, despite it being traditionally Democratic. He criticized the Biden administration, calling it the “worst president in history,” and vowed to campaign vigorously in the state.
Regarding Trump’s legal issues, Bartels stated that they do not impact his decision to support him, as the pressing challenges facing Americans take precedence. He mentioned that a poll conducted among his 9,000 members showed Trump leading Biden by a significant margin, reflecting their dissatisfaction with the current situation in areas such as groceries, inflation, gas prices, illegal immigration, and crime, which they experience daily in New York City.
