Transgender college athlete Sadie Schreiner made headlines by dominating three women’s events at the Liberty League championship meet in Division III track and field. Competing for the Rochester Institute of Technology, Schreiner clinched victory in the 200 meters with a time of 24.14 seconds, the 400 meters in 55.07 seconds, and anchored the winning 4×400 relay team.
Despite Schreiner’s previous standing as the 20th fastest in the boys’ 100-meter school record (11.72 seconds), their times now stand as the fastest for girls at the school. While these times would have placed last in the men’s races, they set new school records in the women’s division. Notably, Schreiner’s 200-meter time also set a new conference record for the Liberty League, surpassing their own previous record of 24.50 seconds.
Schreiner’s victories sparked controversy, with some, like former competitive swimmer Riley Gaines, criticizing the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Gaines highlighted the performance gap between Schreiner and male competitors, emphasizing the need for change in NCAA policies.
In response to criticism, Schreiner defended their participation, stating that they do not have a biological advantage and emphasizing the importance of inclusion in athletics. Schreiner pointed to their consistent performance over nine years of running, attributing any changes in their abilities to medication.
