Meet the Rubyglow pineapple: red on the outside, yellow on the inside, and priced at a luxurious $395.99, this fruit is the epitome of high-end garnishing for your margarita. Fresh Del Monte, the company behind this creation, describes it as an “ultra-premium luxury ‘designer’ fruit” catering to discerning consumers.
In the world of agriculture, scientists and produce companies are constantly pushing boundaries to innovate and captivate the public. Recent fruit innovations include a thornless blackberry, a “Yellow Submarine” tomato shaped like a peanut and colored yellow, and the Luna avocado. Developing a new fruit variety is no easy feat, taking at least a decade. The Rubyglow, grown in Costa Rica after a 15-year development period, holds a registered plant patent in the United States, according to a press release from Fresh Del Monte.
Scarcity is a major factor in the Rubyglow’s high price tag, with only a few thousand expected to be produced this year. Despite this, the fruit will be “available nationwide through select regional grocers.” This latest offering from Fresh Del Monte follows in the footsteps of other designer pineapples like the Mini Honeyglow, a sweet “personal-size” pineapple priced at $11.79, and the Pinkglow pineapple with pink flesh, introduced in 2020 at a cost of $29 before shipping. To justify its premium price, the Rubyglow comes individually packaged in an intricately designed box, reminiscent of origami, as noted by Food & Wine.
